Echoes of Enlightenment: A Double Bill at Coral Gables

The Opera Atelier brings its newest double bill of original works to the historic Coral Gables Congregational Church, transforming this landmark space into a sanctuary of music, poetry, and contemporary opera.

The evening features Sor Juana Inés, an interdisciplinary creation inspired by the extraordinary life of Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, the 17th‑century Mexican scholar whose brilliance defied the boundaries of her era. Often regarded as Spanish America’s first feminist, Sor Juana’s writings—crafted within the confines of a convent cell—continue to illuminate the intellectual and artistic landscape of the Spanish‑speaking world.

Paired with this work is Frau Haydn i Trouble, a chamber opera by Daniel Daroca, produced by The Opera Atelier. With humor, sensitivity, and a contemporary lens, the piece explores the inner conflicts and creative tensions of its characters, offering a vivid contrast to the historical depth of Sor Juana’s story.
