The No Room of Her Own series celebrates the contributions of women artists, highlighting trailblazers who succeeded against many odds, after Virginia Woolf’s essay “A Room of Own’s Own”, in which she asserts that the absence of women in literature was due to lack of opportunity rather than absence of talent. Woolf herself was ostracized because of her identity and her "radical" intellectual views.

“A Room of One’s Own” reenactment lecture frames the series.

The Valkyrie of the Piano, a one-woman show, honors Teresa Carreño, the greatest pianist of her time. Lauded by Liszt, Rossini, Brahms, and Grieg, Carreño was a composer, singer, conductor, and impresario. Yet her fiery temperament- that served her so fittingly at the instrument- did not go over very well in the polite society circles of her time. That, coupled with her stormy personal relationships, made Carreño an outcast in her own country. In the work, the performance style of Carreño will live again through her recordings, some of which will be reproduced during the play, and also serve to inform the pianists’ own live performances The Valkyrie of the Piano is an original multimedia work by Daniel Daroca.

A Piano of Her Own recital will honor women composers, with pianist Daniel Daroca and guest performers in works by Marianna von Martinez, Amy Beach, Teresa Carreno, Modesta Bor, and Gisela Hernández.

Music and Words: Women Composers. This program is a conversation with Jacqueline Solórzano, Xiomara Ponce, Jorge Arcila, and Daniel Daroca, with live performances of works by Marianna von Martinez, Amy Beach, Modesta Bor, and Teresa Carreño.

Encounter with La Malibran celebrates the greatest exponent of belcanto, Maria Malibran, with a recital of her repertory. With Eglise Gutierrez (Royal Opera, Hamburg Staatsoper).

Homage to Ida Haendel, with laurate violinist Erzhan Kulibaev, will honor the legacy of the great violinist that made Miami her home.

"Indeed if woman had no existence save in the fiction written by men, one would imagine her a person of the utmost importance... But this is woman in fiction… In fact she was the slave of any boy whose parents forced a ring upon her finger…in real life she could hardly read; scarcely spell; and was the property of her husband".
